Why I Built A Social Media Site

I know I have said that building a social media site is to give people an option so they can leave corporate social media. However, there is more to it than that.

First, let me fend off the usual allegation, that I am trying to get rich. While I will not deny that such a result would be really nice, that’s not why I am doing this. For the first few months, anyone that signs up has free membership for life. After the first few months, as membership grows, I will charge a nominal membership fee. Right now I estimate $1 a month. The majority of that will go back into maintaining and improving the site. So, let me explain.

This project is basically a Socialist endeavor. I know capitalists will ask why I would not charge more money. The reasoning is simple. I want to keep the cost as low as possible, so basically anyone can afford it.

Others will ask why I will not use the advertising model. While I have not completely ruled out some advertising, any advertising would have to be passive. In other words, I will not put anything on the site which has the potential to track users outside of the site or collect personal information. Doing that would defeat the entire intended purpose- Giving people an option they can trust.

Social media sites can use up a lot of storage and bandwidth. The more storage and bandwidth the site uses, the more I will be charged by the web host. For now the site is on a shared hosting server. I do not expect the site to get as large as FB but consider the fact…
