Social support programs only exist because of the failures of capitalism. Workers being underpaid, jobs laying workers off, lack of jobs are what led to the creation of social support programs in the first place.
Something to understand is that the funding for social support programs is and always has been a Socialist concept. While these programs help the poor, the victims of a capitalist system, the capitalists benefit from these programs. The more these programs are subjected to reduced funding, the more the market suffers as a result.
Capitalists will always say the “free market” can do better. Never mind that the “free market” led to the necessity of these programs. Then, when you ask these ideologues to explain in detail how the “free market” would solve any of the failures of the same “free market”, they are never able to give details, just more tropes. And insults. Always insults.
So, let me explain how programs such as food stamps work and why the “free market” would collapse without these programs. I am merely using food stamps as an example.
