I tend to think we are headed for a dissolution of the US as a singular nation. Instead, I believe that numerous states will secede and we will become a Federation of smaller nations (much like Europe).

This is especially likely to happen if the petrodollar crashes, as it seems extremely likely to do in the fairly near future. That will lead to double and triple digit inflation. Not to mention current states wanting to distance themselves from the national debt. Especially the more prosperous states like CA, who pay more in taxes than they receive in return.
