Communism and Socialism, taken literally, predate the existence of capitalism. Societies existed and evolved because they worked together and did what? They shared the output of their efforts. In other words, they engaged in Socialism and Communism.

The means of production were either owned by nobody (as Native Americans existed prior to capitalist invaders) or were seen as communal, societal. The work was shared, the benefits were shared.

There are tribes and villages in numerous countries which still exist to this day and have no formal currency.
